Archiving

process triggered voluntarily or according to established rules which consists of collecting data from the primary storage, and routing these to the secondary storage, to classify these in a logical way in the catalog and to keep these on a long-term basis. The archiving can be of economical, historical or legal nature.

Physical tape

Secondary storage used in a physical tape drive. This data medium can be vaulted to a location other than the primairy storage to increase security.

Virtual tape

secondary storage used on a disk storage array. This data medium can be replicated to a location other than the primairy storage to increase security.

Catalog

database for recording information about backed-up data (metaThis database is updated during eachdata). This database is updated during each backup, archiving or duplication process and is on the backup server. It is essential to backup the catalog regularly to be able to restore backed-up data.
