2017 has been the year of Nextcloud, if you would ask Google Trends: We’re clearly the project with the greatest momentum in the self-hosted Enterprise File Sync and Share market, steaming past the likes of Citrix Sharefile, Egnyte, Accellion, FileCloud and ownCloud. On the good news that our iOS client hit 300.000 downloads with a 4.7 star rating and our Collabora Online app was downloaded over 100.000 times in 2017, we are excited to share that Nextcloud GmbH has grown 7-fold in 2017, fueled by its unique technology. With already over 100 customers and partners active in Europe, North, Central and South America, Asia and Australia, Nextcloud continues to be a healthy and fast-growing enterprise.

Enterprises need a compliant, secure, easy solution – and Nextcloud provides

New and existing regulations like GDPR and HIPAA increase pressure on IT departments to find solutions that keep customers and patients’ data secure. We see customers come in from the automotive, banking and finance, manufacturing, services and technology markets as well as government and education. Major examples include SIEMENS, the TU Berlin, Raiffeisen, R+V betriebskrankenkasse, MMEC MANNESMANN and many others. We’ve blogged many times about how Nextcloud helps companies with compliance. Activists in Europe are gearing up to enforce compliance with GDPR by suing companies. Local data centers are often not a sufficient solution for the legal challenges of local regulations and public clouds continue to pose other threats as was shown just days ago with Spectre and Meltdown. All this contributes to the strong trend towards self-hosting.

Nextcloud offers the premier solution, with a host of unique features from powerful File Access Control capabilities, Ransomware protection and both server-side and full End-to-end Encryption to one of the most intuitive interfaces in the industry and easy, deep integration in existing infrastructure.

Nextcloud Talk brings self-hosted communication to home and enterprise users

The Result is Growth

In only 18 months, Nextcloud has become the fastest growing Enterprise File Sync and Share solution, but the reason is in no small part that it goes beyond that. Nextcloud has been developing powerful collaboration features and today announced Nextcloud Talk, a fully secure, self-hosted communication platform offering chat, audio/video calls, with mobile apps and a web interface. And we will keep working on this, as Frank Karlitschek said in our press release:

Over the last year, our forward looking and innovative development strategy has been rewarded by the market with a leading position in the area of self-hosted collaboration technology. With at least three more people joining Nextcloud Gmbh this month, we intend to strengthen our position further. While we expand our technological advantage over our competition, customers can expect us to continue to focus on their needs and deliver the expert help that they require.

Last year, Nextcloud doubled its employee roster and this year, two more employees have joined our team already with more to come before the month is over. With already over 100 customers and partners active in Europe, North, Central and South America, Asia and Australia, Nextcloud continues to be a healthy and fast-growing enterprise. Major customers come from the automotive, banking and finance, manufacturing, services and technology markets as well as government and education. Major examples include SIEMENS, the TU Berlin, Raiffeisen, R+V betriebskrankenkasse, MMEC MANNESMANN and many others. Andreas Rode, head of sales at Nextcloud GmbH noted:

Our customers appreciate expert support from an employee-owned business with a sustainable, organic growth strategy. We have proven ourselves as a reliable, capable partner, which shows in the growth of our customers, many of whom are signing 3, 4 or 5 year contracts. On this base we expect an accelerated sales growth in 2018, both within Europe as well as globally.

Community Growth

The Nextcloud community growth has also continued, with 505 contributors adding 6.6 million lines of code and modifying over 53.000 files in 2017. A total of over 1500 people have contributed code to Nextcloud according to the statistics on OpenHub, part of a healthy ecosystem which has formed around the solution. Over 100 new apps have been created on the Nextcloud app store in 2017, delivering a wide range of features to users at home and in the enterprise. Our forum community tripled to over 10.000, with the top post hitting over 85.000 views, and our newsletter gained over 3000 new subscribers, our number of twitter followers doubled and we had over 50% more website visitors. The Nextcloud user base, estimated to be well over 20 million users spread over tens of thousands of Nextcloud servers, has grown to be the largest self-hosted file sync and share community in the world.
